Ko Omura

  • I was born in Tokyo in 1981.

I grew up in America from a young age and began my musical journey through classical piano. During my youth, I spent time in Australia and started learning the drum set seriously when I entered high school. I pursued studies at the University of Sydney and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, specializing in jazz. During my time there, I had the opportunity to perform with outstanding musicians in the country, notably the late tenor saxophonist Dale Barlow, who toured with the legendary Art Blakey in his later years. Despite a mentor-disciple relationship, we also shared the stage and recorded together.

While in Australia, I won the prestigious Billy Hydes Drumcraft Drum Competition and secured sponsorship from SABIAN CYMBALS. I engaged in diverse musical activities, spanning genres such as Jazz, World Music, and Pops.

I returned to Japan in 2006 and shifted my base of activities to Tokyo.

I have participated in major jazz festivals and programs, including the Yokohama Jazz Promenade (2006, 2008), Sapporo International Jazz Festival (2008), Tokyo Jazz (2008, 2009), NHK Session (2010-2013), NHK-BS El Mundo, and others.

I have collaborated with numerous international artists, including Mike Nock's trio (former ECM artist) and Barney McAll's trio (Grammy-nominated). I have gained trust from both domestic and international artists.

I have performed in countries such as India, Jordan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United States, and Australia.

Since 2013, I have been a disciple of Pandit Yogesh Samsi, a young maestro in the Indian classical music scene and a tabla guru. I have also started refining my skills in tabla and studying Indian music.

In 2015, I was selected as a promising artist for overseas training by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and from the beginning of 2016, I underwent an 80-day training in Mumbai, India.

Currently, I am involved in various projects, including my own trio, the quartet Bungalow (with Mike Rivett on tenor sax and electronics, Koichi Sato on piano, and Yosuke Ikejiri on bass), the Nakamura Trio, and the Yosuke Konuma Trio, among other freelance collaborations."
