A collaboration between Aotearoa/New Zealand Māori singer Allana Goldsmith and British pianist Mark Baynes, Goldsmith Baynes is an exciting project of original songs, written in Te Reo Māori and English, performed by a stellar band including Taonga Puoro traditional instruments.
Filmed at CJC Creative Jazz Club during Te Wīki o Te Reo Māori, New Zealand’s indigenous language week in September 2022, this concert straddles jazz, pop and indigenous musics, and showcases a unique sound available nowhere else in the World.
The Goldsmith Baynes project is a celebration between two musical souls, their musical bond comes from freedom, a shared trust, and mutual respect.
Allana Goldsmith is a Māori contemporary jazz artist who hails from the Tairawhiti region, East Coast of the North Island of Aotearoa. Her iwi (tribes) are Ngati Porou and Ngai Tai ki Torere.
Mark Baynes is a British jazz pianist with a contemporary leaning. Mark has been lucky enough to perform alongside some giants of jazz including Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea) and Mireya Ramos (Latin GRAMMY Award Winner), the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and a Broadway cast.
They are joined by trumpeter Mike Booth, guitarist Warren Mendoza, Olivier Holland on bass, fellow Ngati Porou drummer Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa and Taonga Puoro traditional instrument specialist Justin Kereama for this spellbinding show.
