Following a successful tour in Japan, a festival appearance in Bangkok, and sold out shows at Sydney Fringe Festival and the Perth Int’l Jazz Festival (before covid), Rai and drum-gun Ben Vanderwal return to The Jazzlab!

Expect some serious musical telepathy, within the oh-so-groovy framework of Rai’s jazz infused vocals and Ben’s intricate beats, and not to mention, some gratuitous left hand synth bass action.

Rai grew up in Sydney, Australia. His mother was a classical piano teacher, and his father was a language teacher who played bass and guitar in local rock bands. Influenced by his parents, Rai developed an appreciation for a wide variety of music, including classical, rock, pop and jazz.

After high school, Rai was awarded a scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he studied jazz piano. But before he could finish the program, Rai came to the attention of Columbia Records in the US, and signed his first record deal.

Before his first album was released, however, Columbia Records experienced a management shake-up, and Rai was released from his contract. He returned to Australia and started Thirsty Merc, a rock band which over the next ten years would release three successful albums (one platinum, one double-platinum in Australia).

After the third album with his band, Rai decided to take a break to focus on writing music that incorporated jazz and his other early influences. In 2012, Rai came to Los Angeles and started writing and performing extensively, landing opening slots on tours with Bernhoft and Oh Land. His music soon attracted the attention of the LA music community including tastemakers like Chris Douridas of KCRW.

Rai released three EPs under the moniker “Sun Rai,” as well as an album of live-in-the-studio recordings. But to avoid confusion with the artist Sun Ra, Rai began using his given name. Rai continues to work with Thirsty Merc, and splits his time between Sydney and Los Angeles.

Ben Vanderwal is one of the most in demand Jazz drummers in Australia. From an early age he encountered the legendary drummer/teacher Frank Gibson Jnr, who helped unravelled the mysteries of that strange, fascinating music in of all places, Perth.

Originally from there, Ben has also spent time in New York and Melbourne and performed around the world including tours of the U.K., France, Ireland, India the U.S.A., China, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines. Japan, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China and Thailand.

He has played with John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Howard Levey, Madeleine Peyroux, James Morrison, Chris Potter, George Garzone, Kate Ceberano, Mark Murphy, Ernie Watts, Lionel Rose, David Campbell, Rhonda Birchmore, Nigel Kennedy, Don Burrows, Deborah Byrne and Normie Rowe.

Ben has performed on over thirty recordings with a wide variety of artists. In 2007 the album "You R Here" (Jamie Oehlers) which also features Ben, was given the Bell award for best Australian album of that year. In 2008, "The Spanish Tinge" by the Ben Winkelman Trio record that features Ben won the Australian Independent RDKHA (AIR) award for best independent Jazz release. The 2010 release ”On a Clear Day” by Jamie Oehlers and Paul Grabowski recently received the ABC limelight award for best Jazz album.

In the last couple of years has returned to New York to study privately with some of the top Afro Cuban artists on the planet.

In 2011 and 2012 Ben toured with the Tim Minchin vs. Orchestra production performing with each Australian city's Symphony Orchestra.
