Born in Havana, Cuba, he began his musical career with the Benny Moré Orchestra and the Conjunto Casino. He has been nominated multiple times for the Grammy Awards for Best Latin Jazz Pianist and Best Latin Jazz Recording, and won the Grammy for his album “Entre 20 Aguas”, a tribute to Paco de Lucia.

About The Show

Live recording from Café Berlín, Madrid

On August 25, 2023, one of the most prominent jazz pianists in recent years, Javier Gutiérrez Massó, known as Caramelo de Cuba, performed at the Café Berlin in Madrid.

After a cajon and bass introduction, Javier Gutiérrez Massó “Caramelo” enters the stage. He immediately displays his expressiveness and interpretative skills, alternating between the piano and the electronic keyboard in the song “Monday Evening”.

His improvisations contain dissonances a la Thelonious Monk but with the Latin flavor of his native Cuba. In this presentation Caramelo was accompanied by an excellent rhythm section composed of José Montaña on congas and cajon, Alex Chávez on drums, and Jesús Bachiller on bass. Sensitivity and virtuosity meet in Caramelo's piano in the Danzón “Para luego es tarde”. The ideas come out with amazing fluidity from Caramelo's hands in each song and improvisation.

A beautiful and sensitive introduction on the piano gives way to “Nuestro Primer Encuentro”, a Caramelo composition with touches of jazz fusion a la Chick Correa.

Here the bass stands out, and Caramelo's impeccable technique on the piano, who in his improvisations plays melodic quotes from classics such as “Softly as in the Morning Sunrise.” Caramelo explores the beautiful melody of “Pequeña Serenata Diurna” from Silvio Rodríguez that culminates in the style of Latin Jazz. The quartet continues its musical journey through Cuba with a classic contradanza by Emiliano Salvador.
